Application
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to perform live musical pieces, as a soloist for audiences.
The unit applies to those who perform as solo instrumentalists or vocalists. They may perform in any musical genre. They apply technical, musicianship and well-developed stagecraft skills to engage audiences.
No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

1. Prepare to perform music

1.1 Confirm that music is fully rehearsed to required performance standard

1.4 Undertake warm-up routine for performance in line with work health and safety (WHS) principles
1.5 Use relaxation techniques to overcome performance anxiety as required

Performance Evidence
The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to:
- perform music as a soloist on at least three occasions, including:
- demonstrating pre-performance checks and warm-ups in line with work health and safety (WHS) principles
- executing solo elements of performance, including:
- sustaining appropriate intonation, dynamics, phrasing, rhythm and expression during the performance
- sustaining the musical line and/or harmony as required in the style and context of performance
- demonstrating imagination and innovation in the musical interpretation
- listening and adjusting own performance to maintain required sound
- responding to directions
- using techniques to engage the audience
- identifying techniques to effectively managing performance anxiety as required.
- assessing the success of the performance in achieving its potential
- planning strategies to improve future performances.
Knowledge Evidence
The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of:
- pre-performance warm-up techniques
- techniques for using music elements and underlying intentions to enhance performance
- procedures for listening critically to own and others’ performance
- typical requirements for an effective soloist musician or singer
- typical issues and challenges that arise in context of performing as a soloist for audiences, and methods for effectively managing issues and challenges
- WHS principles as they apply to performing in a range of environments
- strategies and psychological tools to effectively manage performance anxiety
- techniques for evaluating and incorporating feedback.
Assessment Conditions
Skills in this unit must be demonstrated in a workplace or simulated environment where the conditions are typical of those in a working environment in this industry.
This includes access to:
- instruments and equipment required to demonstrate the performance evidence
- opportunities for solo performances before an audience
- required venue with adequate space and acoustic qualities for solo performances.
Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
